(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Eng Hussain bin Hassan AbdulHussain, CEO of Haya Water said on Wednesday that the total value of Haya Water assets in Muscat governorate has crossed RO878mn.

He also said that 50 per cent of treated wastewater is dumped in the sea because it finds no usage. Eng AbdulHussain was speaking at a press briefing held under the patronage of H E Dr Khalid bin Salem al Saidi, secretary general in the State Council.

The meeting held at Hormuz Grand Hotel was also attended by the company's management and officials. Addressing the gathering Eng AbdulHussain said, 'The company seeks to achieve the programme objectives of the wastewater re-use project according to the schedule that was prepared in advance, taking into consideration the urban boom and rapid population growth in Muscat and at the same time covering other governorates.

'These were part of the company's approved master plans which took into account the development resulting from the expansion of cities and population growth.' Asking about the treated wastewater, he said, 'Around 50 per cent of treated wastewater is dumped in the sea because of no usage. We are planning to coordinate with some government agencies such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to see that whether this water can be used for farming purposes. We are also looking to coordinate with the Ministry of Sports Affairs so that the same can be done to water playgrounds.' He said that Haya Water is using special equipment to control the foul smell emanating from treated wastewater flowing into the Al Ansab Lake.

'We have succeeded in this plan and the smell emanating from the lake has reduced a lot. We are doing everything to preserve the lake as it hosts more than 290 species of birds from across the world.' Speaking about the achievements, Eng AbdulHussain said, 'Haya Water provides many services such as connecting houses and establishments in Muscat governorate and other governorates to the wastewater service, the sale of treated wastewater, sale of organic fertiliser 'Kala' and laboratory services.'

He said that the amount of wastewater passing through Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) this year will be over 56mn m3, an increase of up to 86 per cent compared to 2012. It is also expected that the number of beneficiaries of the wastewater service will reach 771,000 residents by the end of 2017, more than half of the population of Muscat governorate. The amount of treated wastewater touched 127mn m3 from 2012-17 leading to savings of RO203mn, he said.
