(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat - The US State Department has opened applications for its TechWomen program, which will sponsor women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East to spend a year in the US developing projects in their fields. While staying in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, DC, each recipient of the grant will be paired with a professional mentor to carry out a project with a chosen company. A cultural mentor will also accompany each grant winner, bringing them to local attractions, art exhibits, sports events, and local universities. Applicants must be women with at least two years of full-time employment in STEM fields (internships and unpaid work experiences do not count). They must have a bachelor's degree or four-year equivalent, be proficient in English, be eligible for a US J-1 exchange visitor visa, not have previously applied for an immigrant visa to the US in the past five years (other than the Diversity Immigrant Visa), and not be a citizen or permanent resident of the US. The program accepts applications from the following countries only: Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan or Zimbabwe. Ideal candidates will be proven leaders with little or no experience in the US and a commitment to returning to mentor women in their home countries.
