A female teacher in a primary school in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island was diagnosed with tuberculosis on December 6. Dr Tan Kang John, principal of the Pun U Association Wah Yan Primary School, said the school had immediately asked the teacher to take sick leave, adding that no other teachers or students had contracted the infectious disease, Ta Kung Pao reported.
The extracurricular activity that the teacher was in charge of was canceled.

Tan rebutted rumors that the school had asked the teacher to report for duty even when she was sick, explaining that before December 6, the teacher did not exhibit TB symptoms such as coughing and fever.
The school issued a notice to all parents citing a doctor's advice that the risk of spreading the infection was very low.
The Department of Health refused to comment on an individual case but said it did not see any risk of spreading the infection in the community in the near term.
The department's Tuberculosis and Chest Service has recorded 300 TB cases per month on average over the past year. In November, it recorded 394 TB cases.
In September, seven students and one teacher at Kiangsu-Chekiang College in Sha Tin contracted the infectious disease, Sing Tao Daily reported.
