By Mehdi Sepahvand –- Trend:

Iran is planning to produce 70,000 job positions in the handicraft sector over the coming fiscal year (to start March 21).

The announcement was made by Vice President for Cultural Heritage, Handicraft, and Tourism Ali Asqar Moonesan during a press conference, Trend correspondent reported from the event December 10.

According to Moonesan, part of the jobs will be created through a major governmental plan to fund rural production businesses.

The plan, which comes in form of $1.5 billion allocated to rural development from the National Development Fund, will be doubled through same amount of contribution by banks that will distribute the loans among entrepreneurs.

Moonesan noted that the loans will be of low interest rate of 6 percent (compared to current 15-20 percent interest rates in the country).

"While the governmental plan initially did not include the tourism and handicraft sectors, we managed to talk these sectors into it. And now tourism and handicraft each get 10 percent of the total amount of loans."

He added that put together, tourism and handicraft sectors will receive 24 trillion rials (each USD at about 42,000 rials) in loans within the plan.

The vice president also noted that the government has launched an online handicraft marketing campaign to help startups sell their products in global markets.
