(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat - The Moroccan parliament has condemned the US' decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, saying that the move violates international law and threatens the stability of the region. During a plenary joint session held this Monday, the parliament's two houses voiced their strong condemnation of the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, stressing that this decision undermines the international community's efforts to maintain peace in the region. Marked by the presence of Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani, several ministers, and Palestine's ambassador to Morocco, Jamal Choubki, the Moroccan parliament condemned the Judaization of the holy city and hailed the immediate stand of King Mohammed VI, as chairman of Jerusalem's Committee, against the US intention to move the American embassy to Al Quds, the Arabic name for Jerusalem. Moroccan MPs reiterated their full support and unconditional solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle to establish an independent state with Al Quds as a capital. The speaker of the House of Representatives (lower house), Habib El Malki. said that the US' decision, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration and the celebration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, "shows that the US administration does not take seriously the United Nations resolutions, international law and international legitimacy." "This decision is a huge setback to any hope for peace in the Middle East region and shows that the United States can no longer play the role of peace broker," he said. The Moroccan parliament will host a summit of the speakers of Arab parliaments next Thursday to discuss the developments of this decision. The speaker of the House of Advisors (upper house), Hakim Benchamach, recalled the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council which annulled all Israeli actions aimed at changing the status of Jerusalem. He also recalled the message sent by King Mohammed VI to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in which the Sovereign emphasized that "infringement of the internationally recognized legal and historical status of Jerusalem means one runs the risk of hurling the issue into the quagmire of religious and ideological conflict and would also frustrate international efforts aimed at bringing about an atmosphere conducive to a resumption of peace negotiations." "Morocco will spare no effort in the defense of this issue and rejects any change of the holy city's status," he asserted. On Sunday, thousands of Moroccans have responded to Palestine's call, make a pilgrimage to Rabat to take part in the demonstration decrying US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. "Jerusalem is ours!" The chants could be heard miles away from Mohammed V avenue, where more than 50,000 Moroccans staged a mass demonstration against Trump's move. Traffic was completely blocked in downtown Rabat, where only the colors of the Palestinian and Moroccan flags could be seen flying high above the heads of marching protesters."
