A woman who died after being pulled unconscious from the swimming pool at a yacht club three years ago had high alcohol concentration in her blood, the Hong Kong Coroner's Court heard on Monday.

The 22-year-old woman was found unconscious at the bottom of a pool at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Causeway Bay at the end of a private party held on August 16, 2014, the court heard, Apple Daily reported.

Dr Yeung Wai-tak, a consultant of Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai, told the court that the alcohol concentration in the victim's blood reached 34.2mmol/L (millimoles per liter), which was a high level, and the cause of death was multiple organ failure due to drowning.

The family of the victim wanted to know the cause of death as there were two lifeguards on duty but it took a long time for anyone to notice the woman was at the bottom of the pool.

The organizer of the private party was Hong Kong Dragons Australian Rules Football Club.

The manager of the yacht-club coffee shop testified at the court that the private party offered snacks, soft drinks, and red and white wine in a free-flow format but did not provide any hard liquor, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Another yacht-club manager said the party music was very loud that night and the club prohibited any drinking in the pool, but some of the partygoers did not follow the rules.

A lifeguard who was on duty that night told the court that the guards tried to ask drinkers not to enter the pool but were refused, adding that the loud music at the scene made communication between the lifeguards difficult.

The hearing continued on Tuesday.
