German conservatives to open talks with Merkel

(MENAFN)Chancellor Angela Merkel's party would start exploratory talks on Wednesday with the conservatives on arranging a coalition to end the political dilemma in Europe's largest economy, said a senior member of Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) said on Friday.

The result of the talks was not yet closed. "It's no more and no less than having talks at the moment," said Andrea Nahles, the parliamentary leader of the SPD.

SPD leader Martin Schulz made a plea for a free hand to work for a social "United States of Europe", and consequently the SPD voted on Thursday to hold talks with the conservatives.

The exploratory talks are to be held to find out whether they can work together, before deciding to execute a full-blown coalition talks.
