University student jumps to death at MTR station

A 21-year-old man apparently committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Mass Transit Railway's Sha Tin Station in the New Territories on Saturday.

At 11am, the man, a freshman at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was waiting on the platform at the station on the East Rail Line with his mother, Oriental Daily reported. When a train entered the station, he suddenly jumped on to the tracks and was hit.

Police and paramedics arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, his mother's grief at her son's death was so severe that she was sent to a hospital for a checkup.

It was understood that the dead man's father was a mainland Chinese and his mother a Singaporean. He grew up in Singapore and was a first-year student of the department of government and public administration of Chinese University, Ta Kung Pao reported.

Reportedly he had been suffering from mood disorders and needed to go to a hospital for regular follow-ups.

No suicide note was found. Police did not rule out the possibility that the young man had been stressed out by the need to adapt to a new school environment.
