Arab League asks US to reverse decision of accepting Jerusalem as Israeli capital

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR, 10 December: The Arab League has called upon the United States to reverse its decision of recognising Jerusalem as capital of Israel which may trigger unrest in the region.

The joint statement issued by foreign ministers of 22 Arab countries at the emergency summit in Cairo, Egypt said the US President Donald Trump's announcement of recognising Jerusalem as capital of Israel has no legal value and it is a dangerous violation of international laws. The statement said the US president's announcement is also in negation of its own policy of resolving the issue through talks. It said the US decision will trigger a new wave of violence and unrest in the region.

The Arab League agreed to move a resolution against the US decision in the United Nations Security Council. However, the joint statement did not mention economic sanctions on the US.

During the meeting, Lebanon Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said Arab League should consider economic sanctions on the US to stop shifting of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The Arab League chief at the start of the meeting termed the decision of Trump dangerous for world peace and unacceptable. He said the US decision will serve a blow to the process of negotiated settlement of the issue.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas has also cancelled a meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence after Trump's announcement.
