(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Istanbul, Nov. 29 (Petra) -- Senate President Faisal Al-Fayez, on Wednesday, said the international community is demanded to provide financial support to Jordan to help it address enormous economic and security challenges arising from the Syrian refugee crisis and conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking to the 8th Bosphorus Summit, which began Tuesday in Istanbul under the theme "The Design of Future; The New Challenge of Globalization", Al-Fayez said the international community must understand that supporting Jordan is a duty and that "statements of praise and solidarity" don't help in addressing challenges. In a session entitled "Refugees: Overcoming Humanitarian Challenges" devoted to discuss the Syrian refugee crisis and attended by a number of heads of states, political and economic figures in the world, in addition to many representatives of international bodies, civil society institutions concerned with refugees, humanitarian work and cooperation, the Senate President gave a briefing on the Jordanian experience in dealing with various waves of refugees.
Al-Fayez said the refugee issue, has directly and continuously targeted Jordan over the past seven decades. Today, he added, Jordan is one of the largest refugees host countries.
He noted that the aid Jordan had received from international organizations and donors covered only a small part of the actual cost of this burden.
The volume of Jordan's spending on refugees has reached more than $10 billion to date, which raised the Kingdom's debt and poverty and unemployment rates. However, spending on refugees is still ongoing. Unfortunately, the international community is still failing in this regard, the Senate President noted.
The three-day event included several sessions to discuss issues related to international cooperation, refugees, sustainable development, the future of energy post oil era, alternative energy, human development and skills development.
