Kazakhstan exports cotton to 11 countries

Kazakhstan exports cotton to 11 countries, including Russia, Belarus, Germany, Latvia, Moldova, China, Belgium, Iran, Ukraine, Italy and Korea, said the Chairman of the Board of the National Agrarian Scientific-Educational Center under the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan Askar Nametov, during the meeting with Kazakh officials.

'In 1991, Kazakhstan had no own cotton varieties, but currently the country has 10 varieties, and 5 of them have successfully passed state tests. Presently, the yield of raw cotton is 22-23 centners per hectare, although the potential of the production of new domestic varieties is 38-40 centners per hectare,' said Nametov.

He also stressed that currently nearly 160 varieties and hybrids of 25 agricultural species of have been allowed to use in Kazakhstan. This number includes 39 varieties of potatoes and 103 types of vegetables and cabbage crops.

Agriculture accounts for approximately 6 percent of Kazakhstan's economic production. More than 74 percent of the country's territory is suitable for agricultural production, but only 25 percedtn of the land is arable.
