Uber loses court petition

(MENAFN) Uber has lost a petition against a ruling that its drivers shouldn't be treated as self-employed, but as workers.

However, the company appealed, saying its drivers were indeed self-employed and are not obliged to use its app.

With over 50,000 drivers using the taxi-hailing app, Uber says 80% of them prefer being categorized as self-employed.

The Employment hearing kept its initial decision that any driver of Uber who had the app turned on, was working for the company based on a "worker" contract, which makes them entitled to workers' rights.
