Oman- Duqm Quarries to oversee mining sector in Duqm


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- A newly established entity Duqm Quarries Company will manage and regulate the mining and quarrying sector in the Duqm Special Economic Zone (SEZD).

Eng Ali bin Abdullah al Zadjali, manager at Duqm Quarries, said the company has obtained the usufruct to manage and operate the mining and quarrying sector in SEZD.

Duqm Quarries is a closed joint stock company in which Oman Company for Development of Special Economic Zone in Duqm (Tatweer) owns a percentage of shares while other companies hold the remaining shares. Duqm Private Company, which is owned by the people of the Wilayat of Duqm, also has a ten per cent shareholding in Duqm Quarries.

Zadjali said that the establishment of Duqm Quarries aims to regulate the quarrying and mining sector in SEZD, maintain this national wealth, strengthen supervision and control of activities related to the sector and employ them to serve the national economy.

'Currently, there are many infrastructure projects underway in SEZD that require the provision of raw materials for construction and filling. The expected production volume of raw materials to support the infrastructure projects in SEZD would range from 500 tons to 1,000 tons per hour,' he said.

'The new company will manage and operate the quarrying and mining sector. It will also run the sand and gravel mines. This is in addition to other activities related to the exploitation of quarries for the extraction of stones, sand and filling materials,' Zadjali said.

The activities of Duqm Quarries include investment management in mining and quarrying sector and management of mining and quarrying contracts and other related activities.

'Duqm Quarries is currently preparing and arranging a series of investment contracts for the companies wishing to invest in this sector. It will also provide feasibility studies for sites suitable for quarrying or mining and offer them for investment, in coordination with the competent authorities,' Zadjali said.

He further added that the activities of Duqm Quarries provide opportunities for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in SEZD to benefit from business and support services.
