Afghanistan- Hundreds of protesters erect tents in Helmand


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Hundreds of people on Friday erected protest tents in front of the governor's house in southern Helmand province, seeking removal of some government officials.

The protest began a day earlier in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, and the protestors today erected tents to continue their agitation.

The protestors demand removal of the provincial deputy governor for administration and finance and the provincial attorney.

They say the government should send a powerful delegation to investigate abusive remarks by the same officials against tribal elders and jihadi figures.

Among the protesters was commander and tribal elder Haji Hafeezullah Khan Haqyar, who said the two officials had insulted all elders of the province.

He said the two men had been appointed to key government posts despite being not qualified and lacking knowledge about sensitive culture issues.

He said the two officials had held him in illegal detention and insulted him.

Another speaker, Haj Rahmatullah Khan, said they had resolved the land issue for a cricket ground and work on the facility had started and they supported the project.

He said the two officials using the land issue had insulted tribal elders and had threatened them.

Deputy governor for administrative and financial affairs, Sardar Mohammad Hamdard, said Haji Hafeezullah Khan among tribal elders who had sided with the people who claimed ownership of the cricket ground and had called the government as un-Islamic.

He said the land belonged to the government and the court had given its verdict in the case.

He said Khan was detained after uttering abusive words against the government, but he was released soon.

Attorney office head Mohammad Sadiq Farah said the conflict was over a hundreds of acres of land devoted to a cricket ground, solar power systems and other installations.

He said some people had claimed ownership of the land, but the court had decided in the government's favor.
