An influential Buddhist council has decided to oppose a new Constitution for Sri Lanka saying there was no requirement for a new Constitution.
The Joint Sangha Council of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters of the Siam Sect reached this decision following a meeting held in Kandy today.
Members of the council said that they feel the new Constitution is detrimental as it looks at devolution of powers.
The monks said that they also feel the Executive powers of the President must remain.
The Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters said that the country is already seeing a division as a result of the attempt to draft a new Constitution. (Colombo Gazette)
