Dr Abdulla Al Ne'ama, family medicine consultant at PHCC, has underscored the need of taking medicines for treating hypertension regularly and at the right times.
He said that hypertension is a chronic disease that requires lifelong medication. Each patient should take into account the best time for taking medicines during Ramadan and consult his physician and pharmacist, Dr Al Ne'ama said.
He added that there are a number of medications that help control blood pressure. The doctor will advise the most appropriate medication for each individual, which goes with other health problems that the patient may have, such as diabetes, arteriosclerosis, kidney diseases, etc. In most cases, the patient needs two or more treatments to control blood pressure.
Dr Al Na'ema pointed out certain things that should be kept in mind by hypertension patients during Ramadan.
The patient should consult his physician about the possibility of reducing the dose of medicines. If the dose is twice daily, the first dose should be taken immediately after Iftar and the second dose after Suhoor.
The physician added that some medicines are better absorbed with food, such as (Verapamil SR) and others less (Captopril), therefore it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist before Ramadan, due to the change in habits during the holy month.
It is advisable to measure blood pressure regularly in order to ensure that the reading is not high and one is able to adjust the medicine dose, when needed.
