(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) With only a few days left for the holy month of Ramadan, all charity entities across the country are virtually competing to offer more for charity and help low-income and vulnerable people.
Of these is the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Charity Foundation, a leading charity society in Dubai, which has announced ambitious plans to distribute up to 100,000 free iftar meals to poor people, mainly blue-collar workers this Ramadan.
Dr Raja Easa Saleh Al Gurg, Chairwoman of the Foundation, said they started distributing the Ramadan Meer or foodstuff packages as is the case every year before the beginning of Ramadan.
"As many as 5,000 low-income people registered with the Foundation from across the country, mainly the northern emirates, benefit from the seasonal scheme."
Basic foods, including rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, dates, and other necessary items, are offered in the packages being distributed, she added. "We have also started distributing Eid clothes for the children of listed indigent families."
A number of diverse charity projects come under the Foundation's Ramadan campaign, she elaborated. "On top of these are the Ramadan Meer, Eid Clothes, and Mass iftar."
Up to 3,000 free iftar meals will be contributed every day during Ramadan at certain mosques of the emirate of Dubai, she pointed out. "These include the Easa Saleh Al Gurg mosque in Al Karama and Fatima Abdullah Mohamed Rashid in Al Barsha."
The other mosques covered in the mass iftar project include the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen mosque in Al Warqa, Abu Obaida bin Al Jarrah mosque in Al Jaflia, and Omar bin Abdulaziz mosque in Al Muhaisana.
"We are also preparing 2,500 boxes of diverse foodstuff to be contributed to poor families at remote areas in several emirates in collaboration with the Tarahom charity society."
She said that the Foundation started distributing the due money zakat in cash to eligible people. "Not only do the people registered with the foundation benefit from the money zakat, but also all vulnerable people."
The Foundation is currently finishing two new charity projects in collaboration with government entities here in Dubai.
"The first project, to be carried out in coordination with the Dubai police, is targeting inmates who are also to be encouraged to memorise the Holy Quran, while the foundation is to participate in the UAE Food bank under the second project," she added.
Few days back, the Foundation contributed Dh1 million, as is the case every year, to the Low-income Families Committee, a branch of Dar Al Ber Society in Umm Al Quwain, in support of its philanthropic projects and common objectives.
