The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), a nodal agency of the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry, is a member of the steering committee for the project.

According to A Jayathilak, MPEDA's chairman, the facility will feature advanced infrastructure and be staffed by people with the technical expertise to boost the production of both indigenous and exotic ornamental fish species. It is also expected to develop breeding technologies for high-value indigenous ornamental fish species and ensure that quality fish seeds (fertilized fish eggs) are produced in bulk quantities, he added.

The other aims of the project include the development of new technologies to facilitate an uninterrupted supply of live feeds as well as advanced disease diagnosis and treatment.

The state government's Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives is funding this Rs10 crore (US$1.6 million) facility.
