Qatar- Tamuq partnership event showcases student and faculty projects


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Texas A & M University at Qatar (Tamuq)'s sixth annual Research-Industry Partnership Showcase, 'Making an Impact, highlighted the work by faculty, staff, and student researchers to help realise sustainable solutions to real-world issues with relevance to Qatar.
The event also aimed to strengthen partnerships with local industry to maximise shared opportunities and pursuits of mutual interest.
'Through research, which creates new knowledge and drives innovation, Texas A & M at Qatar is directly contributing to Qatar's goal of becoming a knowledge-based society as outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030, said dean Dr César O Malavé.
Talks were given by Qatar Foundation executive vice-president of research and development Dr Hamad al-Ibrahim, and Dr Abdul Sattar al-Taie, the executive director of the Qatar National Research Fund.
The symposium also included a special panel discussion, 'The Research Environment in Qatar, its Future and How to Increase Tamuq's Impact, featuring representatives from local industry, including Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre R & D and technology manager Dr Marwa al-Ansary, Qatar National Research Fund's Dr al-Taie, Kahramaa head of renewable energy technology Saleh Hamad Mohammed al-Marri, and Total Research Centre in Qatar's deputy director Yousef Mohamed al-Jaber.
Tamuq associate director of research Dr Hassan S Bazzi moderated the discussion.
Students and researchers from Tamuq displayed research findings and outcomes of their recent projects, emphasising their impact to local and international scientific and technical communities.
Several research centres also were represented, including the Gas and Fuels Research Centre, the Advanced Scientific Computing Centre, the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Centre, and the Smart Grid.
In the student poster session, first place went to Abdul Salam Abd, second place to Mohamed Ghufran Rafique, and third place to Mohamed Jaffrin.
In the research staff poster session, Grigorios Matenoglou was placed first, Sun Hee Yoon second, and Dalila Chouikhi third.
Dr Konstantinos Kakosimos, assistant professor in the Chemical Engineering programme at Tamuq, co-chaired the event.
