Jordan- Informative and reassuring

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) His Majesty King Abdullah held a meeting with former media ministers, managers of official media and current and former editors-in-chief of daily newspapers on Wednesday to discuss local, regional and international developments, and his recent visit to the US for talks with President Donald Trump and other high-ranking US officials.

During his visit to Washington, the King's talks with the US president touched on a variety of issues and challenges, including the danger of regional terrorism, the Syrian conflict, the situation in Iraq and the challenge posed by Iran's increasing military and political presence in the area.

National issues especially the dire economic situation in the country also figured high on the agenda of talks.

Still, despite the pressing regional issues and challenges, the Palestinian cause was highlighted, with the King stressing the need for a unified Arab support to Palestinians and reminding that Jordan has been working in coordination with the Egyptian and Palestinian presidents to reach a solution to the Palestinian problem.

The King reiterated in Washington the fact that the Palestinian conflict is central to many other regional conflicts and remains the overriding challenge.

Palestine holds a special place on Jordan's agenda due to the long-standing historical, social and economic relations between Jordanians and Palestinians, but the Palestinian problem should be an Arab concern and requires the joint effort of all Arab capitals to be solved equitably.

Talking about Syria, His Majesty said that developments there will not be allowed to threaten Jordan, which will defend itself from any threats 'without the need to have a role for the army inside Syria', and stressed that the target are terrorist groups, foremost among them Daesh, and that the war on these 'requires a holistic approach worldwide'.

Internally, the King again highlighted the need to respect the rule of law, emphasising that 'there should be no one above the law', and the need for coordination between media outlets and state agencies in order to provide information to citizens in a transparent manner, to preclude those, mostly outside Jordan, from spreading false news with the aim of creating confusion.

Above all, His Majesty gave the much-needed reassurance that the Kingdom is fully capable of dealing with any developments.

It was an informative meeting, one example of transparent working that should be emulated by all officials in the country.
