Push Taliban for talks: Karzai to regional countries

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai suggested Afghanistan should be converted into an area of cooperation rather than confrontation among different regional countries, his office said on Thursday.

Karzai expressed the view at the Moscow International Security Conference, organised annually by the Russian Federation€™s Defence Ministry. Security officials and political figures participated in the event.

€œTerrorism and extremism is on the raise in Afghanistan despite the ongoing war against terrorism, spearheaded by the US and its allies,€ noted Karzai, who demanded different countries should cooperate on ending the war in his country.

The former president stressed the need for a regional mechanism with the backing of the international community to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Karzai believed efforts of regional countries such as Russian, China, India and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) were vital.

He asked the regional players to persuade the Taliban insurgent to initiate peace talks with the Afghan government on ending the 16-year conflict.
