Hosts Qatar settle for exciting four-all draw against Oman


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hosts Qatar and Oman played out an exciting four-all draw in the Asia Cup 2017 Indoor Hockey Championship while defending champions Iran trounced Malaysia 11-0 on the opening day of the five-day event.

Yesterday at the Aspire Dome Indoor Hockey court, fortunes fluctuated in the Qatar-Oman match at the five-a-side tournament.

Qatar led 1- 0 at the end of first half play. Although the hosts dominated the proceedings from the start, finishing proved to be their bane.

Both the teams forced one penalty corner in the first half, with Qatar keeper blocking Oman effort in the tenth minute.

At the other end, Qatar first penalty corner in 16th minute was saved by Oman goalkeeper. Qatar took the lead in the 19th minute through Shahid.

Oman however equalised in second minute of second half 1-1 and took the lead (2-1) in the 25th.

The hosts bounced back to draw level a few minutes later with a field goal from Sohail to make it 2-2 and once again took the lead with a goal from Sheeraz, 3-2.

Thereafter the pace of the match picked up and the match produced three goals within a span of three minutes. Abdul Sami (33) made it 4-2 for Qatar, but Oman were not ready to thrown in the towel and made it 4-3 with a goal in 35th minute.

Oman leveled the score at 4-4 in the 37th minute from a penalty corner and the score remained that way till the final hooter.

In the other matches of the men's section, Kazakhstan trounced Chinese Taipei 7-3, after leading 4-1 at the end of half time.

The third match of the day between Uzbekistan and Thailand ended in a one-all draw.

In the women's section, defending champions Kazakhstan began their campaign on a winning note by trouncing North Korea 5-2.
