Oman- SQU students develop 'cooling vest' for outdoor workers

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Four Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) students have developed a cooling vest which can be of great relief to thousands of workers in Oman.

The vest has been developed by Wajdan Hamad al Alawi, Shifa Saeed al Hadrami, Jahineh Saif al Amiri and Ilham Khalfan al Nadabi from the College of Science at SQU.

Speaking toMuscat Daily , Wajdan, the team leader, said, 'The vest has been developed keeping the interests of construction and municipality workers, cleaners and those employed in the oil and gas fields in mind.'

The vest can be of great help for those who work outside during summer

She said that the vest uses nanotechnology for cooling and was made by using fabrics that have similar characteristics to those used on spacesuits developed by NASA. The vest has the ability to absorb water from the atmosphere and later evaporate it so as to reduce temperature and cool the body.

Speaking about the challenges the team faced, she said, 'We continuously worked on the project for at least four months. After we cleared the first hurdle, seven companies came on board to take the project forward. We thank everyone for the support. We are planning to patent our innovation to produce and sell it in different markets. Our project won at the 15th Science Festival which was held by SQU on April 16. We competed against 48 teams to come out on top.'
