(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – As soon as El Othmani took office, request files started piling up on his desk. Among them, the National Association of Tourist Investors (ANIT) has just sent an open letter to the new head of government to alert him to the chronic problem of regression which affects the sector.
'Your government can no longer ignore this strategic sector,' the ANIT addressed El Othmani in an open letter. This is the second time the association, chaired by Jalil Ben abbés-Taarji, has addressed the government about the critical situation in their sector, after a proposalfirst published last October.
The association's request remains the same: to draw the attention of the new head of government to the difficult situation that the Moroccan tourism industry is experiencing. 'The sector is now declining. The confidence of investors, donors and most professionals has disappeared. This situation, which has been agitating since 2010, has been very poorly managed, even ignored, throughout the last legislature, transforming a cyclical crisis into a structural crisis,' the association said.
'More than 500,000 families live from tourism, even though most observers believe that the sector was neglected in the last legislature,' criticized tourism investors. According to their data, dozens of hotel units are threatened with closure due to a national occupancy rate of around 40 percent.
The situation has placed purchases and forecasting payments balance in jeopardy. 'Your government may face the economic and social consequences of this situation if nothing is done to redress it quickly,' they said in their open letter.
In this regard, operators are insisting on the need for an uncompromising diagnosis of the current situation through the assessment of Vision 2010 and Vision 2020 at the mid-term. This has been established to draw lessons from the past and lay the foundations for thoughtful reflection.
L'ANIT's open letteralso calls for a rethinking of the sector's strategy to produce a credible and realistic plan of attack going forward. It is requesting a new, creative approach that carefully considers the realities of the international political environment, competition, new trends in demand and new economic models at work in this industry at the global level.
In other words, the El Othmani team is being called upon to do better than its predecessor in terms of regional planning, through the development of an offer adapted to each region. Among the other demands from this group of professionals, is the creation of an industrial ecosystem for the hotel/tourism sector aimed at favoring the local production of goods and equipment for tourist establishments.
