'Thousands of people are charged with DUI offenses every year in Southern California, in particular the Los Angeles area, said L.A. criminal defense lawyer Arash Hashemi.

Fourth, watch for DUI checkpoints. These must be announced ahead of time. Find them online.
"Keep your car in good shape and drive the speed limit. A taillight or headlight out, cracked windows or an expired tag gives officers a legal reason to stop you. If your car is in proper condition, officers have to look for another reason to pull you over," he said.
