Los Angeles criminal lawyer offers 6 tips on avoiding DUI conviction

'Thousands of people are charged with DUI offenses every year in Southern California, in particular the Los Angeles area, said L.A. criminal defense lawyer Arash Hashemi.

Arash Hashemi is skilled a skilled DUI defense attorney in Southern California. He has six tips for avoiding and dealing with DUI charges.

"First, don't drink and drive. That's just common sense. If you plan to be someplace where alcohol is served, have someone become a designated driver," he said. "With a designated driver one does not have to worry about sobriety checkpoints and other people in the vehicle also don't have to worry."

Get a handheld breathalyzer. A quick check online shows these small units sell for $30 to $130. Mr. Hashemi said the units are not perfect, but they are an excellent guide. Be sure to read the user instructions.

Third, be aware that law enforcement is out in force around holidays and major sporting events, like playoffs and championship games. "It's OK to go to the stadium and have a beer or two, but have it early in the game so your body has burned off the alcohol by the time you leave," Mr. Hashemi said.

Fourth, watch for DUI checkpoints. These must be announced ahead of time. Find them online.

"Keep your car in good shape and drive the speed limit. A taillight or headlight out, cracked windows or an expired tag gives officers a legal reason to stop you. If your car is in proper condition, officers have to look for another reason to pull you over," he said.

Lastly, if you are stopped and charged with DUI, contact a DUI defense attorney. Mr. Hashemi is experienced in defending people charged with a DUI.

"A DUI is s serious matter. It can affect the rest of your life, including what jobs you can get. If you are charged with this offense, a good DUI defense attorney could be the difference between a DUI conviction and a lesser charge or getting the charges eliminated altogether."
