(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) A jirga held two days ago decided to give two minor girls in marriage to settle a dispute over a murder between two families in the Khairkot district of southeastern Paktika province, witnesses said on Saturday.
A member of Khairkot district's youth council, Azamat Katawaz, told Pajhwok Afghan News the little girls were given in Ba€™d two days back over the killing of a woman.
He said a resident of the district had beaten his wife to death. She hailed from Janikhel district. After the murder, the two families engaged in enmity and father of the slain woman had demanded six girls and 400,000 Pakistani rupees in compensation.
"Yesterday, a jirga decided to give two minor girls and Rs200,000 to the slain woman€™s family," Katawaza said, asking the government to prevent such incidents.
A member of the jirga, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said their aim by giving the girls in marriage was settle the dispute between the families.
A resident of Sharana, the provincial capital, Hazrat Shah, said such marriages were overt violation of Islamic teachings and human rights.
About the issue, the governor€™s spokesman, Mohammad Rahmany Ayaz, said local officials were aware of the incident and they had asked the families to come to the governor€™s house. He said officials would ask the families to reverse their decision.
The incident comes despite many tribal agreements in Paktika districts to avoid the ba€™d practice.
