(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Muscat- In probably the first case of successful breeding of Koi carp in Oman, a group of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) students has induced the fish to spawn last month. Two days after spawning, most of the eggs hatched.

The students are pursuing the Fish Reproductive Physiology and Breeding course at the Department of Marine Science and Fisheries at SQU and the project was undertaken under the supervision of Dr Wenresti Gallardo.

Koi carp is a large ornamental variety of common fish, originally bred in #Japan but is now bred in other countries.

Three years ago, Koi carp juveniles were obtained from #Thailand through the efforts of Dr Gilha Yoon and MSF technicians Ahmed al Souti and Adil al Sulaimani.

The Koi carps were reared in the aquaculture facility at the #Agriculture Experiment Station (AES) of the university and are now ready to be used as spawners.

The baby fish (larvae) are now being taken care of by the students, Mohamed al Wahaibi, Dhabya al Rasb, Madrak al Aufi, Salim al Mamari, Aaisha al Rahbi, Bushra al Kharusi, and Mohammed al Qarni, with the help of Muntaser (AES staff) and Ahmed al Souti, the technician and teaching assistant for the course. 'Hopefully, we can continue to make the Koi carps reproduce. We do not have to buy them from other countries. Adult koi carp with beautiful colour design can be sold to fish hobbyists at around RO50 per piece,' Dr Gallardo said.

As a contribution of SQU to the aquaculture development in Oman, the Department of Marine Science and Fisheries at the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences is offering new aquaculture courses such as Fish Reproductive Physiology and Breeding, Fish Nutrition and Feeding, Aquaculture Systems and Engineering, and Aquaculture Development and Management of its Environmental Impact. Through these courses, students are able to contribute to the aquaculture development in the country.
