Unesco Doha Office is organising a YouthMobile coding workshop in Qatar next month under its initiative 'YouthMobile through which young people are introduced to computer science programming (learning-to-code) and problem solving (coding-to-learn).
'Unesco Doha Office is a cluster office for GCC countries and Yemen which works with a vision to empower women and men of the region, in particular the youth, with the capacities to contribute to knowledge-based societies through education, science, culture and communication and information in close partnership with member states, the private sector and civil society, said Anna Paolini, Director Unesco Doha Office, while briefing the media on the agency's functioning and achievements.
The two-day workshop will be held in Doha from April 5-6, 2017. Under the YouthMobile initiative, Unesco and its partners strive to provide young people with the high-level skills and confidence to develop, promote, and sell locally relevant mobile apps that solve local issues of sustainable development and provide employment.
Responding to a question regarding Unesco's "Floating Mangroves" project launched a few years ago in Qatar, Paolini said that unfortunately Unesco Doha was not working on the project now. 'Though it was a very good project and its pilot study was also very successful, we are not on it, she added.
Qatar had launched an innovative "Floating Mangroves" project at Lusail Marina. The project was initiated in March 2012 to explore the use of mangroves for capturing carbon emissions, or sequestration, helping to reduce atmospheric carbon levels. Project partners included the Unesco, Lusail City and Qatar University's Environmental Club.
From April 2-5, 2017, Unesco is also organising 'GCC Workshop on Combating Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Artifacts". Paolini said that Unesco cluster office was working across 7 countries with the United Nations and regional partners including 'Digital Transformation in Education in Bahrain, 'Children and the Safe Use of ICT in Kuwait, 'Cultural Summit in UAE, 'Big Tree Society in Kuwait, 'Arab States Summit of Ethics and Bioethics Committees in Oman and 'NGO Forum in Saudi Arabia.
Faryal Khan, Education Programme Specialist at Unesco Doha Office, highlighted the strategic objectives of Education 2030. She said the vision of the programme was to 'ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The global education agenda (Education 2030) is part of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The global goals and targets aim to stimulate action over the next 15 years in the Five Ps of critical importance: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership. The success of these goals is driven by the education goal. The SDGs reflect the important role of education by encapsulating targets in a stand-alone goal.
She said that education had implications across the entire SDG agenda and was included in other targets like ending poverty, health, gender equity, decent work, responsible consumption, climate change and peace, justice and strong institutions.
Faryal said that Unesco Doha Office was working in the region on ‘capacity development for educational policy and planning for ED 2030' and ‘educational quality and improved learning outcomes'. She said that 'GCC Conference on Green Schools Education for Sustainable Development will be held in Jeddah from April 19-20, 2017.
In the natural sciences field, Paolini said that Unesco Doha was looking after Al Reem Man and Biosphere Reserve. The reserve covers almost 10 percent of the total land area of Qatar and was declared a Biosphere Reserve under the Unesco Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme in 2007.
A biosphere reserve is a unique concept which includes a protected area and surrounding land that are managed to combine both conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
