(MENAFN- Gulf Times) KSD XI emerged as the champions of the QPlays Sixes Gully Cricket Carnival 2017. In a nail-biting final, KSD XI defeated Scorpions by six runs to clinch the inaugural tournament at the Asian Town International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
The event was organised by Qplays, in association with Ibn Ajayan Projects, one of the leading facility management companies in Qatar and QECC The largest cricket players community in Qatar. The tournament was managed by Qbiz Events.
A total of 24 teams battled for the top honours and in the end KSD XI walked away as the champions. The triumphant team took home a winners' trophy and cash prize of QR5,000. Runner-up Scorpions had to be content with QR2,500 and also a trophy.
Scorpions won the toss and elected to bowl. However, the decision backfired after Riyas R smashed 39 off just 12 balls to propel KSD XI to 70 for eight in the allotted six overs.
Although KSD lost their first wicket cheaply, Riyas and Kasim, who made 17 off 10 balls, stitched a crucial partnership. Once Kasim was out, KSD XI lost wickets at regular intervals. But man of the final Riyas, who hit six sixes, made sure his team put up a massive score. For Scorpions, Ishak T and Shareef took three wickets each, while Nijaz and Rashid picked up one apiece.
In reply, Scorpions were well on course for a victory as Faisal Moideen (21) and Ismail (13) gave them a good start.
Ishak too chipped in with a 6-ball 15, but Scorpions lost wickets at crucial times and with it the momentum too. Rashi remained unbeaten on nine off 7 balls but Scorpions could only manage 64 for 4 in 6 overs.
Irshad bowled two crucial overs, conceding just 15 runs and took two wickets. Sadiq S and Mustafa also put breaks on the scoring and bagged one wicket each. The tournament was an initiative from organisers to tap into the talent at the grassroots level and give them a platform to excel on the big stage. Unlike the professional cricket, rules are improvised to suit the nature of the gully cricket format.
The Sixes Gully Cricket Carnival was supported by number of brands like Grand Mart, Doha Rocks, Smile Hypermarket, Lamborghini Energy Drink, Sharaf DG and Al Wadi. The media partners for the tournament were Q Tickets, BQ Magazine, Al Raza Solutions and Clear Graphics and Print.
