Kuwait- France urges US to remain mobilised to fight climate change

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, March 29 (KUNA) -- France on Wednesday called on all nations, "including the United States," to remain mobilised to combat climate change in line with the COP 21 global climate agreement signed in Paris in December 2015.

A statement from the French Foreign Ministry remarked on the decision by President Donald Trump to rescind restrictions on coal production in the United States and also to cut financing for environmental protection programmes.

"France is convinced that the transition towards a low-carbon economy is an essential element to reach the international community's objectives set out in the Paris Climate Accord" in 2015, the statement indicated.

During his election campaign, Trump has vowed to review the climate agreements which he said were hurting American business and he minimised warnings of the danger of CO2 emissions for the planet.

France said that Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has urged the international community "to remain mobilised with all good will available, including in the United States, to fight against climate change." Earlier Former Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who oversaw the Paris COP 21 accords, said that the US President's positions were "a serious step backwards." (end) jk.mt
