First Smart City Summit Oman begins


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The first Smart City Summit Oman was inaugurated by Sheikh al Fadhl bin Mohammed al Harthy, secretary general of the Council of Ministers at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre on Tuesday. The inauguration was held in the presence of dignitaries, senior officials and diplomats.

The summit is seeing participation of delegates from Dubai, Qatar, Korea, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Belgium, Singapore and India from sectors like IT and technology, telecom, infrastructure, real estate and manufacturing. Speakers at the summit include over 25 leaders and experts presenting case studies from a number of countries including Sweden, the UK, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Oman, Bahrain, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

The first day of the conference saw keynote lectures on the regional and global vision of smart cities. It also covered ways on how to build a successful smart city, the initiatives to enhance smart capabilities in Oman, the key role telecom operators play in the vision of smart cities, culminating in a roundtable session.

The topic, 'Smart Cities Readiness Guide' was also explored. The second day of the conference will see a CEO panel highlighting the concept of a smart city and the major role a national digital vision can play in the economic development. The following sessions would explore the regional overview of the importance of a solid ICT infrastructure in smart cities, the Internet of Things, smart cities as platforms for innovation, the big wins that cities can achieve. The day's activities will conclude with a roundtable discussion aspects of smart cities and the digital vision.

Commenting on the summit proceedings, Tarek Ali, general manager, OITE Trade Fairs said, 'The Smart City Summit Oman intends to complement the efforts and initiatives the country launched many years ago for the establishment of modern telecommunication and Internet infrastructure. Now, it is time to advance into new concepts that are feasible economically and introduce new horizons for public and economic services. With a plethora of such speakers, we are providing a collective networking and learning experience of the highest level.'

The Smart City Summit Oman is being hosted under the strategic partnership of the Information Technology Authority (ITA), Oman Broadband and Omran, with the Smart Cities Council as supporting partner and FTTH Council MENA as association partner.
