Qatar- Tingting stars with double gold as China dominate on final day

Teenager Liu Tingting grabbed two gold medals as Chinese gymnasts dominated the final day by winning four out of five events at the 10th FIG Artistic World Cup, which concluded in front of an almost full house at Aspire Dome yesterday.

The rising Chinese star competed with top stars of the sport on her way to winning gold medals in women's balance beam and floor exercise finals.

Tingting had a great performance to pip Romania's Catalina Ponor, who had to be content with the silver medal despite her impressive performance.

The 16-year-old Chinese, who also won women's balance beam gold in the World Cup series in Melbourne last month, amassed 14.466 points to bag her first gold medal of the day.

Ponor, a triple gold medallist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, collected 13.900 points.

'I am satisfied with my overall performance, Ponor told reporters after collecting her silver medal.

'Tingting is a star in the making. She has been very impressive and I wish her luck, added the Romanian.

China's Huan Luo also had a great start in the event, but finished third (13.700).

Australian star Emily Little, who won a bronze at the Melbourne leg last month, was placed fourth (13.200).

Croatia's Ana Derek (12.833) was fifth, followed by Turkey's Sanli Goksu Uctas (12.700), Australia's Emma Nedov (12.433) and Hungary's Zsofia Kovacs (12.100).

Tingting secured her second gold medal when she reigned supreme in the floor exercise final, which also saw 42-year-old Uzbek Oksana Chusovitina in action.

Tingting earned 13.366 points after an amazing display to win the competition. She was followed by Australia's Little (13.133) while Croatia's Ana Derek won bronze medal with a tally of 12.900 points. Oksana, who won the women's vault final on Friday, wasn't at her best as she finished last with 12.266 points.

Meanwhile, Zhou Jingyuan claimed the third gold medal of the final day for China by winning the men's parallel bars competition.

Zhou, who won a bronze in the rings on the first day, collected an impressive 15.900 points. Germany's Marcel Nguyen came second (15.066) while Switzerland's Pablo Braegger finished third (14.800).
Turkey's Ferhat Arican was fourth (14.766) followed by Vietnam's Hung Phuoc Pham (14.600) and Thanh Phuong Dinh (14.466), Lithuania's Tomas Kuzmickas (13.966) and Armenia's Artur Davytan (13.900).

In the last final of the day, Ruoteng Xiao completed the tally of four golds for China by prevailing over his opponents in horizontal bar final. He accumulated 14.533 points to win the contest.

Tin Srbic of Croatia (14.400) claimed the silver medal while Swiss Christian Baumann secured the bronze medal with 14.166 points.

Earlier, in first final of the day, Vietnam's Thanh Tung Le had a perfect landing to win the men's vault final with 14.733 points.

Armenia's Artur Davytan, a crowd favourite, had an excellent execution, but could not match Thanh and came second with 14.433 while Finland's Heikki Saarenketo (14.366) finished third.
Germany's Felix Remuta (14.283) was fourth followed by Turkey's Ferhat Arican (14.266), Australian's Christopher Remkes (14.233) and Stephens Clay Mason (14.216).

Romania's veteran gymnast Marian Dragulescu finished eighth (13.983).

Around 240 gymnasts and officials from as many as 30 countries participated in the four-day championship, dubbed as the best event of Doha legs so far.

Apart from the World Cup next year, the Qatar Gymnastics Federation will also host the World Championships in October and November in 2018.
