SHARJAH, 25th March, 2017 (WAM) -- H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has affirmed that international events such as the Paris International Book Fair bring together supporters of culture and knowledge.
Sheikh Sultan was speaking to an audience who had gathered to witness the launch of the French version of his book "Under the Flag of Occupation" on Friday.
Sheikh Sultan thanked the audience for their presence at the event and stressed that the content of the book was evident from its cover, adding that Al Qawasim's real flag was replaced with another that was imposed by the occupying power, a move that ensured all decisions were taken at gunpoint.
The book is one in a series that have not yet been translated into French unlike other such books as "The Conflict between Power and Trade in the Gulf," "Al Qawasim and the British Aggression," "Tale of A City," "Sharjah Between Protection and Colonialism," "Sard Al That," and "Hadith Al Thakira," he added. He expressed hope that the whole collection would be translated into French by the time the Paris International Book Fair begins next year.
HH went on to emphasise his passion for culture and his association with all that nurtures the mind and serves humanity, saying that his personal library was rich with French books which expressed the passion of the French for culture, especially those which dealt with Egypt and its architectural, historical and environmental treasures, as well as its humanitarian, literary, thought and artistic legacy.
He concluded his speech saying, "We hope that that true co-operation returns between the various cultures to serve humanity, instead of personal or regional interests." He thanked the audience for accepting the invitation saying that a return to culture is a return to reason.
Former French minister of culture Rono Dufabre presented a detailed reading of the book, underlining the strong relations between the UAE and France and expressing pride in the rich presence of His Highness' books on the shelves of the Paris National Library.
The book shows HH's deep friendship with history and thought, and his strong vision that is based on peace, respect of law, tolerance and cultural diversity, making Sharjah a regional capital for culture and art, he noted.
Dufabre also highlighted and hailed the high narrative accuracy of the historical details and events His Highness' had presented in his book. Later His Highness signed copies of the French version of the book which he dedicated to the audience.
