UAE- Federal Court jails Asian national for passing military and security information to foreign intelligence service

ABU DHABI, 22nd March, 2017 (WAM) -- The Federal Appeals Court sentenced Sh. S. M, a national of an Asian country, to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for passing sensitive military and security information about a critical facility in Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi to intelligence service agents of a foreign country.

The court ordered the convict to pay all expenses of the trial.

The convict will be deported after completing the jail term.

The court also ordered the confiscation of all devices used in the crime.

Two other Asians were cleared from a charge of taking photographs in restricted areas.

In another case, an Emirati identified as Kh. S. A, 19, confessed to joining ISIL (Daesh), travelling to Syria, receiving training, and fighting in the ranks of the terrorist organisation.

The court adjourned the case to 26th April in response to a request from the defence team to consider the case.

The public prosecution also charged two Emiratis H.A. Sh, 37, and A.A.Y, 24, with seeking to join Daesh, communicating with elements of the terrorist organisation, and buying air tickets to travel to Syria to join the organisation.

After the defendants denied the charges, the court adjourned the case to 26th April upon a request from the defence.

Meanwhile, the court heard the pleadings of defence lawyers in the case of Iranian S.M.A., who was charged with supplying equipment to Iran for its nuclear programme, and decided to issue the verdict 26th April.
