Sky gazers in Qatar would be able to get a glimpse of the planet Mercury at its closest approach to the Sun- Perihelion point, in its orbit, on Thursday, March 23, at 5:00pm.

Qatar residents and the people in the region must be far from environmental and light pollutions to observe Mercury over western horizon at 11 degrees after sunset.

Mercury will be appearing over Qatar sky until its set time at 6:53 pm. So the planet can be seen for an hour and 7 minutes after sunset on Thursday .

'This astronomical phenomenon is very important for astronomer, because they can update the programmes used for calculated the planet's orbits. Moreover, this phenomenon emphasises Mercury's orbital period around the Sun (88 days), and Mercury will be at Perihelion point again on June 19, 2017, said a statement issued yesterday by Dr Beshir Marzouk and Dr Mohammed Al Ansari of the Qatar Calendar House.

The planet Mercury reached to Aphelion point (away point) in its orbit around the sun on Tuesday Feb. 7, 2017.
