One of the largest Crusader castles in the Levant, with an area of 24,000 square metres, Karak Castle is a 'dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and endless passageways', according to the Jordan Tourism Board's website (AP file photo)

AMMAN — EU ambassadors on Thursday visited Karak in a show of solidarity and to highlight that Jordan, including the southern governorate, is safe and secure.

Tourism Minister Lina Annab said that the Karak Castle had resumed active tourism activities, adding that the events that happened in Karak were a one-time incident that any country or city in the world could face, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In December last year, seven security personnel, two civilians and one tourist were killed in a terror attack in Karak, located some 140km south of Amman..

Annab added that the visit of 13 EU ambassadors to the historical Karak Castle was an important message that Jordan and its tourist attractions enjoy peace and stability, calling on international tourists to visit the Kingdom, especially the castle that reopened recently.

EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Matteo Fontana said that this visit of solidarity with Karak residents shows that Jordan is a safe country, calling on EU nationals to visit the castle.

Karak Governor Sami Daaja briefed the EU diplomats on the city's touristic, agricultural, industrial and educational sites. He also called on the EU to invest at Al Hussein Industrial Estate to develop the area and provide jobs necessary to address poverty and unemployment issues.

The EU officials listened to a briefing from Karak Antiquities Director Khaled Tarawneh on the history of the castle, the successive civilisations that inhabited the area, and the restoration and maintenance projects in the castle.
