India to sell 51pct share in Air India

(MENAFN) India is aiming to sell a share in Air India, the country's national carrier, to a partner in an offer to turn almost the loss making airline.

In addition, the proposal involves reviving Air India amid five years of selling a 51 percent share, asking not to be identified as the information is not public.

Meanwhile, strong competition from non-state local airlines has added to the woes of the former monopoly carrier, which is loaded with almost USD7bn.

However, the carrier's share in the regional market has dropped to 14 percent from 35 percent a decade back, placing it third in the national ranking.
