Major road projects nearing completion in Dubai


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has allocated 50 per cent of its budget this year for construction of roads and mass transit systems to upgrade the city's infrastructure and realise its vision of a 'safe and smooth transport for all."

Some of the major projects include the Airport Road improvement with a cost of around Dh404million; Umm Al Sheef and Latifa bint Hamdan Street project costing Dh501million; and the Academic City street improvement project at Dh474million. Other projects include the intersection of Sheikh Rashid Road with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road costing around Dh611million and upgrading the road network around Expo 2020.

The RTA has provided Khaleej Times the current status of these projects and the projected completion dates.

AIRPORT ROAD IMPROVEMENT

> Cost: Dh404m

> Completion: 1st quarter of 2018.

> Details: Upgrading of four junctions on Dubai Airport Road: Rashidiya, Nad al Hamr, Marrakech and Casablanca junctions, which will be upgraded by constructing new bridges and flyovers and one vehicular underpass at Marrakech Junction.

> Project benefits: Can accommodate around 5,000 additional vehicles per hour on this road.

UMM AL SHEEF & LATIFA BINT HAMDAN STREET

> Cost: Dh501 million

> Completion: July 2018

> Details: The proposed Interchange (IC) 2.5 is located on the segment of Sheikh Zayed Road between Interchange 2 and Interchange 3 which comprises Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and Al Zumorrod Street that connect to Al Khail Road on the east side of Sheikh Zayed Road, and Umm Al Sheif Street, which connects Jumeirah Road and Al Wasl Road in the west side of Sheikh Zayed Road.

> Project benefits: The Interchange is designed to provide direct access to both Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and Umm Al Shief Street.

ACADEMIC CITY STREET

>Cost: Dh474m

> Completion: October 2017

> Details: The project is located at the eastern part of Dubai urban area, the road corridor is located between Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road to the west and Emirates Road to the east, running north-south direction with approximate length of 25km bounded by Academic City Interchange and Al Yalayis Street .

INTERSECTION OF SHEIKH RASHID ROAD with SHEIKH KHALIFA BIN ZAYED STREET

> Cost: Dh611m

> Completion: 1st quarter of 2018.

> Description: The project consists of improvement of Al Shindagha corridor and improving traffic condition at Sana junction by constructing a grade separated junction with two-lane bridge over the junction providing free flow on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and a four-lane tunnel carrying free flow traffic of Sheikh Rashid Street.

> Project benefit: The improvement will result in increased capacity to offset the increased traffic forecast in the coming years.

ROAD NETWORK AROUND EXPO 2020 LOCATION

> Cost: Dh3.2 billion

> Completion: End of 2019.

Enterprise Command and Control Center project will be opened in Q1 of 2017

> Details: The location of Expo 2020, close to Dubai's Maktoum International Airport and close to some of the main road corridors within Dubai. Dubai Metro's red line extension called Route 2020 is planned to operate before the opening of the Expo event. 8 interchanges are also planned to be completed.

> Project benefits: This is to provide all traffic movements for the 300,000 visitors per day for the Expo Event, as well as for the Expo Legacy in 2030.
