China's '16 GDP slows to 6.7 pct, lowest in 26 years

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, Jan 20 (KUNA) -- China's economy grew 6.7 percent in 2016 on the year, the slowest annual expansion in 26 years, official data showed Friday.

Gross domestic product (GDP) of the world's No. 2 economy was down from the 6.9 percent growth in 2015, the National Bureau of Statistics said on its website.

The pace of expansion slowed for the sixth year in a row. The index was the lowest since 1990, when it grew 3.8 percent. In the final quarter of last year, China's GDP expanded 6.8 percent, up from the 6.7 percent growth in the third quarter.

Last March, China adopted the country's economic and social development blueprint for the 2016-2020 period, which sets targeted average annual economic growth at above 6.5 percent in the next five years. The 6.5-percent annual growth rate over a five-year period is the lowest for over three decades. (end) mk.hb
