Oman looks to popularise Brazilian martial art


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Capoeira Championship 2017 came to an end at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, under the patronage of H E Dr Abdulmunim bin Mansour bin Said al Hasani, Minster of Information recently.

Eng Khalfan bin Saleh al Na'bi, a member of the State Council also attended the closing ceremony alongside a number of guests and officials. The championship, that was held from January 12-15, witnessed around 200 participants from 25 countries and regions including Brazil, Oman, Europe, Latin America, East Asia and GCC countries.

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music.

The closing ceremony began with a speech from Mahmood bin Khamis al Uraimi, chairman of the Organising Committee, followed by H E Hasani honouring the participants and the Brazilian association for its support to the event.

H E Hasani said, 'The championship had added value due to the participation of competitors from other countries who showed great interest.

'Capoeira is a traditional sport that originated in Brazil and has attracted international interest. The sport has many advantages as it develops psychological and physical abilities of participants.'

The minister said a sport like capoeira can appeal to youngsters in the sultanate and the championship was a step towards popularising it. The sport can also benefit people with intellectual disabilities.

Maistra Adna from the Brazilian Association for Capoeira Support and Development said, 'I am very happy being here in Oman for the second time, after the 2015 championship. I would love to always be in Oman for these championships so that I can help transfer the knowledge and culture of this sport in Oman.'

Maher al Alawi, a participant said, 'I have been practising this sport for six years now and have benefited much from it. One of the biggest things I gained from this sport is getting to know many people. This sport also helps you gain fitness and improve your focus.'
