Qatar- QM to showcase works of Picasso and Giacometti


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar Museums (QM) will showcase the works of two of the most important artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), in an exhibition from February 22 to March 21 at the Fire Station's Garage Gallery.
In collaboration with the Musée National Picasso and the Fondation Giacometti, the exhibition will bring more than 120 works by Picasso and Giacometti from the two art institutions in Paris, France to the Middle East for the first time.
The Picasso-Giacometti exhibition, curated by Catherine Grenier (French Ministry of Culture's chief heritage curator), will also include exceptional loans from French and other international collections, covering various artworks such as paintings, sculptures, sketches, photographs and interviews with the artists.
Speaking at a press briefing yesterday at the Museum of Islamic Art, Fire Station director Khalifa al-Obaidli said ‘the exhibition reflects two years of research undertaken by the two art institutions, revealing for the first time the previously unknown relationship between
Picasso and Giacometti.'
Despite a 20-year age gap, Picasso and Giacometti shared many moments, both personal and professional, and the two artists 'never ceased to discuss their creations.
The month-long exhibition forms part of QM's ‘spring exhibitions and programmes' aimed at bringing new art, culture and heritage experiences in the country for residents and
visitors to enjoy.
The ‘JR Retrospective' exhibition, set from March 6 to May 31 at QM Gallery, Building 10, Katara the Cultural Village, will feature the works of a renowned French artist.
JR combines art and engaged actions through large-scale outdoor installations, films, photographs and videos, using the streetscape as his canvas and his inspiration.
At MIA, the ‘Imperial Threads: Motifs and Artisans from Turkey, Iran and India' exhibition will run from March 15 to
November 4.
The exhibition will showcase the connection between three major dynasties who marked the start of the early modern period in Islamic art the Ottoman,
Safavid, and Mughal empires.
QM will also present award winning photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson's striking portraits dubbed as ‘Skate Girls of Kabul' from June 15 to
September 16 at QM Gallery.
Mathaf Permanent Collection exhibition is underway at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, which showcases more than 9,000 works.
Some of QM's upcoming programmes include The New York Times 'Art for Tomorrow conference set from March 10 to 13 at W Doha Hotel and Residences themed as 'Boundaries, Identity and the Public Realm.
The conference will bring together more than 200 world-renowned art and cultural influencers from more than 20 countries.
In addition, residents and visitors will have the chance to see and take part in a series of major exhibitions, festivals and events during the Qatar Germany 2017 Year of Culture.
