(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A team from Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) Heart Hospital has been recognised for its efforts to create a better experience for patients being treated by the Cardiac Electrophysiology Department.
The team was recently lauded at HMC's prestigious annual Stars of Excellence Awards which celebrated its success in improving both operational efficiency and the patient experience.
Dr Nidal Ahmad Asaad, Chairman of Cardiology at Heart Hospital, said, 'The Stars of Excellence awards encourage us to work even harder to make more improvements and innovations that will expand the quality of healthcare services at HMC, and consequently enhance the patient experience and the treatment journey at the Heart Hospital.
Dr Asaad noted that supported by new technology, enhanced procedures and visiting international experts, there has been a marked increase in procedures carried out by the Cardiac Electrophysiology Department over the last six years, leading to spectacular results.
He said, 'Electrophysiology studies test the electrical activity of the heart to find where an arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) is coming from. In 2016, the Electrophysiology division performed more than 290 electrophysiology procedures and more than 140 device implementations for heart rhythm disorders and heart failure compared to only 13 procedures which were carried out in 2010.
'The project was also extremely cost effective as it demonstrated a substantial decrease in the number of patients with heart issues seeking treatment abroad. Similar projects could be initiated in other departments at HMC, he added.
Commenting on the role of technology in supporting the department's improved results, Chief Technologist, Dr Alsayed Abdulrahman Mahmoud said to facilitate the development of the service, the electrophysiology laboratory was upgraded to give patients the best possible experience.
'We also purchased and installed high-tech equipment. As a result, there was a significant increase in the number of procedures carried out in Qatar, he said.
Dr Anees Thajudeen, Consultant from the Cardiac Electrophysiology Department, also emphasised that great results have been achieved over a period of five years of hard work.
'We engaged experts and professionals in this field from across the globe - physicians and cardiologists from the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States to make this project happen, Dr Thajudeen said, adding, 'These well-known experts shared their knowledge and expertise with us by performing procedures and helping to train our staff. These invited clinicians performed 77 and 56 electrophysiology procedures respectively in 2015 and 2016.
