FTA with US gave strong momentum to relations between Jordan and US, minister


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Dec. 8 (Petra)--Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yaroub Qudah said that the Jordan and the United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has given since its signing, a strong momentum to trade ties between the two countries.

In remarks during the annual meeting that was organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Jordan and attended by the mayor of Amman as well as pubic and private sector officials, the minister said that both countries have strong ties and are committed to further boosting them in various domains.

Qudah said that the FTA between the two countries is one of the most successful agreements signed by Jordan, but focuses on textile and garments with exports reaching $1.4 billion.

"Jordan is facing many challenges, mainly unemployment that stands at 15.6 percent, and we in the government work and believe that investing in the private sector is the way to address these challenges," Qudah added.

He said the Kingdom suffers from a rise in the public debt that reaches 95 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), noting that the private sector can play a role in increasing growth to overcome the rise in debts.
