Oman- SQU, Southampton University review Oman Drilling Project

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- On December 1, 2016, Dr Rahma al Mahrooqi, SQU deputy vice chancellor for Postgraduate Studies & Research, received a delegation from Southampton University, UK, to discuss potential areas of collaboration between the university and SQU and to review progress with arrangements for the Oman Drilling Project.

The delegation was led by Dr Juerg Matter, associate professor in Geoengineering at the Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton, who also met professor Sobhi Nasir, director of the Earth Sciences Research Centre at SQU.

The Oman Drilling Project is a comprehensive drilling programme that involves the participation and training of British and SQU students and employees from Oman's ministries. This project will sample exposed sections of the oceanic lithosphere at Wadi Tayeen and Samail. The Samail Ophiolite in Oman is the largest, best-exposed section of oceanic lithosphere in the world. More than 40 natural scientists from a broad spectrum of disciplines will use the new datasets from these samples to address a diverse range of scientific questions relating to the formation, hydrothermal alteration and biotic and abiotic weathering of oceanic lithosphere.

In these meetings between Southampton University's delegation and Dr Rahma, professor Sobhi discussed opportunities for student training at the drilling site and scholarships for postgraduate students. Both parties also explored the possibility of more research cooperation between the two universities in the near future.
