Egypt- Morsi to hear new verdict in Qatar espionage case on 22 November

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) Detained former president Mohamed Morsi will hear a new verdict on 22 November in the 'Qatar espionage' case according to a decision the Cassation Court issued on Tuesday.

This comes after cassation prosecution authorities recommended that Morsi's appeal against his sentence be accepted by the court. According to state-owned media Al-Ahram on Tuesday, Morsi's defence lawyers argued that he cannot be tried by a criminal court in the case.

Morsi was originally sentenced to life in prison on 18 June of this year on charges that he and several aids had illegally obtained copies of intelligence and other confidential reports on the Egyptian Armed Forces' plans and leaked them to Qatar with the aim of endangering the country's stability.

Morsi was ousted on 3 July 2013 by the military under the leadership of then defence minister and current President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, following a wave of protests that started 30 June of that year, which demanded that Morsi leave office.
