Obviously, the list is headed by two superstars - Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Five-time winner Messi and three-time winner Ronaldo are the only previous winners nominated for a prize that is no longer linked to Fifa.

The France Football magazine will announce the winner in January next year, but now we want you to select your winner by picking one of the options given below.

So who is your favourite for the award?

Is it Messi who won two titles with Barcelona - La Liga and the Spanish Kings Cup?

The Argentine star scored 26 La Liga goals in 33 matches despite struggling with injuries but failed to help Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Messi also failed in the biggest match for Argentina this year.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner failed to convert his penalty in the shoot-out against Chile in the Copa America final as his drought at international level continued.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, helped Real Madrid win their 11th European title as he scored 48 goals in 51 matches in all competitions.

But the biggest moment in his career came when helped Portugal win their first ever major title at the Euro 2016. He may have got injured in the first half of the final against hosts France in Paris, but his teammates came up with a superb effort to help him realise his biggest dream.

Both Messi and Ronaldo will face serious competition from Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann.

The French striker not only helped Atletico reach their second Champions League final in two years, he was also named the player of the tournament at the Euro 2016. With six goals, he was also the tournament's top scorer.

Also, there is Barcelona star Luiz Suarez who scored a staggering 59 goals in 53 matches as the Catalan club won two titles.

Also don't forget Neymar who played a big role in Barcelona's season with 31 goals in competitions. Neymar also helped Brazil win their first Olympic football gold at the 2016 Rio Games.
