India: Soldier, civilian killed in Pakistan border firing


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- One Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier and a civilian were killed and seven others were injured as Pakistan Rangers shelled various locations in Jammu district along the Line of Control in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir state on Monday.

Indo Asian News Agency, quoting a local police source, said "A BSF trooper identified as Sushil Kumar, and an eight-year-old boy were killed, while seven others, including a BSF trooper and six civilians were injured in heavy shelling and automatic gunfire by Pakistan Rangers on the Line of Control," adding all the injured were transferred to hospital for treatment.

Armed forces of two giant Asian nuclear powers exchanged heavy shelling and firing all night in Jammu district.

The police said "Heavy shelling and firing exchanges continued throughout the night between Indian and Pakistani troops in Kanachak, Akhnoor, Arnia and some other places on the international border in Jammu district." In a related development, one separatist militant was killed in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday in an encounter with Indian security forces.

On receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of militants, the Indian security forces had encircled Warnow village in Kupwara.

New Delhi accuses Islamabad of supporting and funding the armed groups in Kashmir, claims which Islamabad denies and insists Kashmir people are defending their freedom. (end) atk.tg
