(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Moroccans have launched a petition entitled 'A Cry of Dignity,' calling on the Moroccan government, the Foreign Ministry, and the National Council for Human Rights to protect the rights of Moroccan citizens living in Saudi Arabia.
This initiative follows videos that have gone viral on social media, showing Moroccans claiming to have been assaulted and abused in Saudi Arabia.
The petition is aimed at defending the rights of the Moroccan community living in Saudi Arabia after video footage went viral on social media last month, showing Lamiaa Moatamid, a Moroccan woman in Saudi Arabia imploring King Mohammed VI to put an end to her unwarranted persecution after she had been arrested and put in prison for suing her alleged rapist who she claimed had brought her to Saudi Arabia under false pretenses. A few days later, the king interceded personally to bring her back to Morocco.
The petition's creators said, 'The aim of the petition is to free Moroccan detainees in Saudi Arabia after we have discovered that there are many [Moroccan] victims of suspicious work contracts'
The petition's creators also call upon the government 'to review the Labor Code and the work contracts between Moroccans employees and their employers in Saudi Arabia and also in other Gulf countries in order to safeguard the dignity of Moroccans.'
Earlier this month, after Moatamid's call for help, another Moroccan woman appeared on social media networks, calling upon King Mohammed VI to bring her back to Morocco.
'I'm imploring King Mohammed VI to do me justice. I do not want anything; I just want to go back to Morocco. I do not want to stay here. I'm dying day after day,' she said.
