Aurora Labs Ltd (ASX:A3D) has lodged a new patent application in relation to a novel metal powder production process for 3D metal printing.

The Perth-based company garnered attention after developing a range of metal 3D printers that are cheaper than its competitors.

The latest development of the novel metal powder production process could lower costs and support the mass adoption of metal 3D printing technologies.

It is worth noting that the cost of metal powders used in the 3D metal printing process is critical to the cost competitiveness of 3D metal printing compared to traditional metal manufacturing.

The patent is in the provisional application stage and has not yet been granted.

Aurora Labs listed on the ASX in August 2016 after successfully raising $2.8 million through an IPO.

Investors who participated in the IPO are having a great run with the shares last trading at $1.24, a six-fold increase over the issue price of $0.20.

The cash injection from the listing will be used to bring Aurora Labs"; small format 3D printer to market and to further develop its medium and large models.
