Omantel has been recognised as the 'Brand of the Year' by the World Branding Forum at the World Branding Awards.

The prestigious award was conferred at a glittering ceremony that was held in London to celebrate and recognise the achievements of some of the best brands in the world. The event was attended by global industry leaders representing a wide variety of sectors.

Commenting on the achievement, Omantel CEO Talal al Maamari said, 'We are extremely proud to have won this prestigious award. At Omantel, we are constantly striving for business agility, innovation and to enrich the lives of our customers. This award is validation that we are moving in the right direction. In addition to winning the award, it was also an honour to be the sole company from Oman and the only telecommunications company from the region selected as a winner.'

The nominees for the World Branding Awards are judged according to three categories: Brand valuation, consumer market research and public online voting. Omantel was selected as winner of this award along with 210 global brands from 31 countries. A number of renowned global brands including Apple, Google and Facebook have been winners of this prestigious brand in past few years.

Omantel continues to pioneer substantial growth in the telecommunications arena. As the demand for broadband services in Oman grows significantly, both in mobile communications and in the fixed line network, the leading telecom operator in the Sultanate has significantly boosted investments across its nationwide broadband network, while expanding products, services and infrastructure.

The company also recently landed a number of prominent submarine and terrestrial cables linking Asia, Africa and Europe passing through Oman. In this regard, the company's strategy is to meet growing capacity requirements from customers locally and internationally and helping to position Oman as the preferred communications hub of the region.

Omantel recorded a remarkable performance during 2016. Group revenue as of June 2016 grew to RO271.6mn, an increase of 5.9 per cent compared with RO256.6mn for the corresponding period of 2015. Retail and wholesale revenues recorded a growth of 1.7 per cent and 27.8 per cent, respectively. The growth was mainly driven by broadband revenues of the retail segment, while submarine cable capacity sales in the wholesale segment rose by 108 per cent.

Mobile and fixed broadband services are key drivers for growth at Omantel, with the total domestic subscriber base as of June 2016 (including mobile and fixed businesses and resellers) reaching 4.39mn, an increase of 5.7 per cent. Omantel's mobile network market share (including resellers) is estimated at 58.5 per cent with a revenue share of 59.4 per cent. Meanwhile, the fixed telephone (post & pre-paid) market share is estimated at 74.4 per cent with a revenue market share of 85.1 per cent.

Omantel was selected the best brand in the telecom sector as per the outcomes of the annual survey conducted by BusinessToday magazine.
